When the gaming community looks back at Hello Games' galaxy exploration game No Man's Sky, it shows an impressive redemption arc that many probably didn't see coming. Along with Cyberpunk 2077, NMS is often listed as the game with one of the most disastrous releases. It was plagued with bland content and a sense that the developer had lied to fans about the possibilities that awaited them back in 2016. However, years later, the game is a fully fleshed out, enjoyable experience, that delivers on content and receives a ton of free updates. Now there is a chance that the next update is on the way.
In a recent tweet, Hello Games' founder Sean Murray hinted that the latest iteration of No Man's Sky may be about to drop. In one of his trademark cryptic posts, Murray lists all the updates that the game has had so far. Starting with "Foundations" he runs down the list and ends with the first major patch, "Prisms." At the very bottom of the tweet, after a few periods, is the word "Frontiers" next to a pair of goofy eyes.

This highly suggests that a new major update is coming, and will likely be called this, though there is no further information as of this article going live. The last No Man's Sky patch that came out was back in June of this year. This update, the aforementioned "Prisms," had graphical improvements, and some quality of life enhancements as well. Given that patches tend to come out just a few months apart, it's entirely feasible that Murray's tweet is in fact referring to the next big change and that it will be called "Frontiers."
The controversy that followed in the wake of the game's initial release has meant the studio has not only had to work hard to make amends, but the founder has made promises about how he will handle the next game the team makes. In an interview last year, Murray said that he had learned his lesson about hyping games, after a discussion about Hello Games' next title.
Five years on and No Man's Sky is very much the game it should have been from the start. With the developer continuing to put out new content and frequent updates, this next iteration, if indeed that is what's being hinted at, is already getting fans excited. Nobody really knows what it will entail, but fans will have to wait for confirmation about whether this is a new major update to the game.
No Man's Sky is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
