Psychonauts 2 is finally out, and fans both new and old are excited. 16 years after the release of the original Psychonauts, Raz's adventure finally gets to continue. And it has been worth the wait.
After all that time, Psychonauts 2 does come across as a throwback game. Aside from the game's deliberately retro art style, Psychonauts 2 plays like a classic collect-a-thon platformer, packed to the brim with hidden objects and secrets.

It's expansive enough that fully completing Psychonauts 2 may take up to 22 hours. With that much content, players will want to make sure their progress is always saved.
A Shifting Save System
While Psychonauts 2 borrows plenty of aspects from its predecessor, the save system is not one of them. The original Psychonauts allowed players to manually save at any time from the pause menu. But that option is missing in the sequel.
Instead, the save system has been modernized and fully automated. Like most recent releases, Psychonauts 2 will autosave when entering areas, obtaining important collectables, completing story events, and when crossing other progress flags. The player doesn't need to think about it, but they dont' have any control over it either.
Psychonauts 2 does not have a branching narrative, just a singular ending. Players don't have to worry as much about making a wrong decision and wanting to rewind. They also don't need to worry about points of no return: Psychonauts 2 allows players to return to previous levels and collect any remaining obejcts in the after-credits post-game.
Still, some players may not like lacking a manual save system. While there's no news about implementing one, there is a way to check and see when the game was last saved.
Players should exit the game by going to the options menu and choosing the quit button. Not only does this further lessen the unlikely chance of a corrupted save, but before the player leaves, the game shows how much time has passed since the last save. If they want to keep going and trigger another, more recent save, then they can back out and continue playing.
While some classic die hards might miss the option to manually save, the auto-save system has been consistent and frequent enough that most players don't have any issues to report, like lost progress or glitches. It just becomes a background element, floating in the player's subconcious.
Psychonauts 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
