Sonic the Hedgehog turns 30 this year. A new digital showcase will reveal the future of Sega’s enduring mascot on Thursday, May 27.
Sega announced Sonic Central on their official Twitter account. Presented as a streaming event centered around the iconic Hedgehog, Sonic Central will include appearances by Sega’s Sonic Team as well as unannounced special guests and announcements.
In a press release on Tuesday, Sega promised that the live stream would announce “a plethora of upcoming projects, partnerships and events spanning the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and beyond.”
Sonic the Hedgehog’s most recent games were a series of spinoffs: Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Team Sonic Racing, both released in 2019. Sonic Forces (a 3D platformer) and Sonic Mania (a 2D platformer) were the blue Hedgehog’s most recent core titles, both released in 2017.
What we might see
A new Sonic collection, the Sonic Racing Game, a remake of Sonic Colors, and a possible brand new Sonic game showcased on the 30th-anniversary video are some of the leaks that we want to see on Sonic Central.
A handful of rumored collections and remasters – including a rerelease of the Wii game Sonic Colors and a Sonic racing game – have leaked via retail listings. These reports aren’t yet confirmed by Sega, and you’ll likely have to wait until the Sonic Central presentation to find out.
Possible new core platformer
Sega collaborated with the creative agency Liquid+ Arcade to create a new “Unstoppable” promotional campaign highlighting fans’ long relationship with the Sega Genesis-era mascot. In this video, we can see a little cutscene that we can’t identify on previous Sonic games that could refer to a new game, which may be in development. We have to wait to see what Sega has to show us on Thursday.
