Sony will give free PSVR games to PS Plus subscribers to celebrate 5th anniversary

Celebrating the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation VR’s release, Sony has announced that they will be giving away bonus free PSVR games to PS Plus subscribers as a thank you to all those who have invested in and supported the virtual reality console.

There will be three bonus PSVR games given away as part of PS Plus, starting in November, with more details on these coming in the next few weeks. We can likely expect to have one game per month through to January 2022 instead of all in one go, but will just have to wait until the next PS Plus free game update at the end of the month.

This will presumably be in addition to the regular range of games: a pair of PlayStation 4 games and one PlayStation 5 exclusive title.

To speculate as to what these games might be, Sony has only ever given away 12 PlayStation VR games to date through PlayStation Plus, and most of them have been cross-platform titles playable on PS4 without VR. See these games here:

  • RIGS: Mechanized Combat League
  • Bound*
  • Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
  • StarBlood Arena
  • TrackMania Turbo*
  • Here They Lie*
  • Wipeout Omega Collection*
  • Firewall: Zero Hour
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration*
  • Concrete Genie*
  • Farpoint
  • Star Wars: Squadrons*

* Game playable without PSVR

Further to these, Moss, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Thumper and Paper Beast were given away as part of the 2021 Play At Home initative.

In other words, there’s still a ton of games that Sony could offer as freebies without clashing with PSVR games already featured on PS Plus. They have Blood & Truth as a big first party game, they could give indies the spotlight with fun games like Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes, drop something AAA onto our laps with Resident Evil 7, or go for some of the biggest VR games out there with Beat Saber. Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess.

As well as dropping the news of the freebies, Sony looked back on the VR console’s first five years, revealing the five most-played games on the platform.

Who would have thought that Rec Room, Beat Saber, Skyrim and Resident Evil 7 would be so high on the list, eh?

While Sony rightfully wants to celebrate five years of this pioneering console, I think pretty much everyone has an eye on the future, as the headset’s capabilities have been well and truly surpassed on every front. Thankfully, Sony are on the case, revealing earlier this year that they are hard at work on PlayStation VR 2, revealing the newly designed controller and some of its capabilities, as it makes the most of the PS5 hardware. Later leaks and reports have also given us an idea of the new headset’s resolution and tracking, and suggested that Sony is aiming to get more AAA games onto the next-gen PSVR.
