The remake of Knights Of The Old Republic sounds like it’s going to be a very different game to the original, with more action-based combat.

Virtually nothing is known about the Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake at the moment but anyone that’s familiar with the original has been wondering exactly what developer Aspyr will do about the original’s combat system.

In the 2003 original, battles were based on Dungeons & Dragons rules, complete with simulated dice roles and round-based action that could be paused at specific points. It was relatively old-fashioned even at the time and it was never likely it would be recreated for the remake.

YouTuber MrMattyPlays, who has previously leaked information on the game – such as the Switch port of the original, claims that this is exactly the plan and that the remake will use a more action-based system.

In that sense, the game is beginning to sound very much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which wasn’t a traditional remake at all but significantly changed both the gameplay and the story.

That’s likely to be true of Knights Of The Old Republic too, given how Lucasfilm insists that everything has to be officially canon nowadays.

There’s also the question of how long the original was, with multiple different planets to visit and a runtime of at least 30 hours.

With modern graphics that implies an extremely expensive game that will take a long time to make, despite the fact that Aspyr (which has little experience with a project this size) admits development has only recently begun.

Clearly there’s still an awful lot left to find out about the game and no clue as to when more information will be provided.

There’s little indication that the rumoured State of Play event in February will feature the game, but it is more than possible it’ll be spotlighted at the Star Wars Celebration event in May.
