Rumours of a 4K-capable Nintendo Switch model have been around for a long time now, but have really heated up over the last few months. Reports have suggested that Nintendo has asked developers to make their games 4K-ready, and that the new console will be out some time in 2021, and while an official announcement from Nintendo is, of course, yet to come, some new details may now have been unearthed on the long-rumoured Switch model.

Known dataminer SciresM claims to have unearthed further evidence of the “Switch Pro” in the newest Switch firmware update (via ResetEra). The hardware revision, allegedly codenamed “Aula” seems to have 4K capability, as reports have claimed in the past, with SciresM suggesting that the new 4K chip is likely in the console’s dock, and not in the tablet itself.

That said, the tablet reportedly also has a better display, with references to an OLED screen purportedly found in the new firmware update. In addition to the Realtek 4K chip inside of the dock, the Switch itself also supposedly has a new Mariko SoC, which should hypothetically lead to improved battery life and better cooling.

It’s best to take any unconfirmed reports with a grain of salt, especially when it comes to the famously secretive Nintendo. There has been no shortage of leaks and reports of a more powerful Switch revision in the past, and a lot of the information here seems to fall in line with that, but it’s best not to take this as confirmation for now.

Last year, reports also suggested that Nintendo had “a slew” of games planned in 2021 – both first and third party – to go along with the new Switch model’s launch. Read more on that through here.
