Nintendo has announced that a new Tetris 99 Maximus Cup will be held this weekend to commemorate the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD. Nintendo is a bit late on that, but regardless of the delay, players will have the chance to earn a new theme based on the recently released remaster.
Running from August 6, 2021, until August 9, 2021, players will need to earn 100 points over the weekend to unlock the theme on their profiles. This is a relatively easy task as finishing above last place gives you five points while winning a game will grant you 100. It shouldn't take longer than an hour if you're decent at Tetris 99. If you do happen to miss it, the theme will be available after the event for 30 tickets.

Tetris 99 may not be as popular as it once was, but Nintendo hasn't stopped supporting it with themes focused on recent releases since it was made available. Essentially acting as a form of marketing, it certainly brings out people in droves to try and unlock a new look for their favorite puzzle title. I know I have booted up Tetris 99 each time a Maximus Cup comes around.
I'm not sure if Nintendo can keep this going forever, but subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online don't really have much else. It would be great for the company to expand its free offerings beyond simple themes for a battle royale game, but I guess we'll have to take what we can get for now.
