Hades creative director Greg Kasavin shared his impressions of Returnal — another prominent roguelike of 2021. According to Kasavin, Housemarque’s title quickly became “one of his favorite games” thus far, and he has already invested “several dozens” of hours into it.
In a new interview with ComingSoon, Greg Kasavin said he had been following Housemarque’s games for years, as the team “is a super cool developer.” Right now Kasavin still plays PS5-exclusive mega-hit Returnal, being pretty deep into the game. In his words, “Returnal and Hades are so different, especially with the whole point of view of the action” but both titles prove “how much breadth there is” in the roguelike genre for dedicated studios.

“I loved how Housemarque took their own point of view on the arcade style bullet hell combat that’s been in their previous games and presented it in the roguelike structure,” Kasavin said. The creative director continues to say such an approach pretty much parallels Supergiant Games, as the devs “deliberately brought back some of the hack-and-slash Bastion gameplay” and put it in a new form.
Despite the genre being pretty crowded these days, Greg Kasavin believes the roguelike structure is deeply fascinating, allowing the developers to create very distinct and unique projects. With Hades, the team felt like there was plenty of room to still explore things further. Therefore, they used the loop structure as a premise to tell a story where someone would die and return over and over.
Returnal explores the same topic, but instead of the Underworld, the game puts players on a hostile Atropos planet, full of deadly threats. Kasavin admitted he hadn’t finished the title just yet, which is hardly a surprise considering how hard the game and its bosses could be.
Returnal is currently available only on PS5. Meanwhile, Hades is playable across almost every platform, and you can play the game via Xbox Game Pass. Despite its overwhelming reception among critics and players, the devs confirmed there are currently no plans for a Hades sequel and nothing in the works right now.
