The Witcher 3: Should You Fight The Troll Or Leave Him Alone?

The Witcher 3's expansions added plenty of great quests to the game. While the main ones get most of the spotlight, there are some strong side missions, too. For instance, Hearts of Stone's Missing Miners contract is a compelling little adventure. In classic The Witcher 3 fashion, the quest is basic in premise, but the story surrounding it makes it worth playing.

However, the contract is not as much fun if you don't know what you're doing. So, here is everything you need to do to complete the quest. Plus, there's also some information about the quest-ending choice, which will allow you to make an informed decision.

Initiating The Quest

The most common way of beginning this quest is by taking the notice from the board in Blandare, which is in the central area of Skellige. Alternatively, you can skip a few steps by finding a body not far from the miners' camp, which is northwest of Blandare.

Talk To Gjarr (Notice Board Only)

This extra conversation with Gjarr is only possible if you started the quest by collecting the notice. It isn't a huge miss as he's not among the best DLC characters, but it does give you more context on what happened to the miners.

Go to the top of the hill in Blandare to find Gjarr's house with him inside. The elder tells you that they sent some people to gather silver from the mountains, yet none of them have returned. You can negotiate your fee if you want, before setting off to find the miners' camp, which is up the road heading northwest.

Follow The Tracks

While in the miners' camp, you can examine some silver next to the tent and find several footprints heading northwest. Follow the prints to find a body and evidence of someone crawling.

Keep using Witcher Sense to track the trail until you get to a cave. From the remains, Geralt will figure out that a Rock Troll is to blame for the bodies. Enter the cave and approach Wham-a-Wham.

Dealing With Wham-A-Wham

Upon meeting the troll, it will attack you. But after a short battle, Geralt will pause to have a conversation with the creature. The troll will explain that he killed the people from Blandare because they entered his home and started mining. After hearing his side, you get two options on what to do with Wham-a-Wham:

  • Fight The Troll ("Won't get away with this.") – Able to loot the body afterward and receive a better reward from Gjarr.
  • Leave Him Alone ("I'll let this slide. They were asking for it.") – Gain 25 experience, 50 coins, and some Silver ore.

If you choose to keep the peace with the creature, you can just leave. Whereas, if you fight, you shouldn't have too much trouble since the troll isn't among the most powerful monsters in the game. Just use Ogroid oil and a flurry of fast attacks. After he's down, take the trophy from the corpse.

Tell Gjarr What You Did

Whether you killed him or not, you'll need to head southwest of your location to Blandare and speak to Gjarr. The elder won't be too happy if you let the creature live and give you a lesser reward as a result.
