With such a large and expansive universe within the MCU, there is really room for any character to return at any point. Phase 4 will see the unexpected returns of characters like Jane Foster and The Abomination, but there is another character possibly being brought into the fold that is even more exciting – Thor's roommate, Darryl.
While Darryl has not appeared in one of the feature-length MCU projects, he did become a fan-favorite character after appearing in a couple of short movies entitled Team Thor. Though he hasn't been seen in a long time, Slashfilm recently asked Thor: Ragnarok producer Brad Winderbaum if Darryl might make a future appearance. While Winderbaum only said it was a possibility that fans would see more of Darryl, Slashfilm insisted his tone seemed to tease it would happen sooner rather than later.

Darryl first appeared in two short movies entitled Team Thor directed by Taika Waititi, which were used to show what the God of Thunder was up to during the events of Captain America: Civil War. According to these shorts, the God of Thunder was living in Australia with a human named Darryl Jacobson. The shorts showed the God of Thunder and Darryl dealing with typical roommate things, like dividing the chores and paying rent. Darryl then returned in Team Darryl where he had a new roommate, The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum).
The next God of Thunder adventure in the MCU is Thor: Love and Thunder, which will bring back Waititi as the director and, of course, Chris Hemsworth as the titular hero himself in his fourth solo movie. Hemsworth will be joined by returning cast members like Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Goldblum himself. The Guardians of the Galaxy will also be featured in the movie alongside new cast member Christian Bale as the villainous Gorr the God Butcher.
The first Team Thor movie was the first hint of how Waititi would be approaching the God of Thunder's franchise. Instead of sticking to the overly serious fantasy action tone of the previous two movies, he went in a completely new direction, embracing his own wild sense of humor while also letting Hemsworth show off his funny side. The gambit paid off and reinvented Thor as one of the MCU's most entertaining heroes. Darryl himself made for a great character to play off Thor's arrogance and cluelessness. The prospect of getting to see more of the character is very exciting.
Perhaps the new short will have him rooming with a new character, such as Thompson's Valkyrie or even Waititi's Korg. While these shorts don't appear to be part of the MCU canon, it would also be fun to see Darryl pop up in Thor: Love and Thunder to make him officially a part of the MCU.
Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 6, 2022.
