The PlayStation 5 is a highly anticipated console and many are hoping that the console can build on the legacy of previous console iterations. There has been speculation that the PlayStation 5 will outsell its next-generation competitors when it releases, but the build-up to the release of the console has had its issues. Ubisoft recently revealed how the PS5 would manage backward compatibility and it has concerned some players while raising questions for others.

In recent years, Sony has focused on remasters in its marketing strategy. While remasters have been successful for the PS4, some players have hoped for backward compatibility to remove the need for re-purchasing games. Initially, a leak from Ubisoft stated that only PS4 games would be available on the PlayStation 5 and that previous generation titles would not be compatible. This sparked a great deal of disappointment from fans, and Ubisoft has now changed the webpage that revealed this information.

In a support page, Ubisoft stated that backward compatibility would not be “possible” for “PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation games.” Most fans had anticipated that the PS5 would not focus on old games and this makes sense as the platform has had a great deal of success by remaking and remastering titles. However, it seems that this is not how Sony wanted to announce the changes. Ubisoft has now taken down the section that explicitly explains the compatibility stance and this is likely due to the backlash from fans and how it may impact the launch of the PlayStation 5.

The way announcements are made has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic and as a result, the gaming industry is having a more difficult experience of constructing a marketing narrative. Leaks such as this one add to these problems, as Sony hasn’t been able to present the reasoning behind the decision to ease the concerns of fans. Many fans are still keen to find out more information about the PlayStation 5 and it will be interesting to see if this mishap prompts Sony to interact with consumers more directly to create anticipation for the console.

Interest has been evident as the PS5 has revealed its features but many would like a more comprehensive look at the system than what they are currently getting. Sony may prioritize showcasing the console more in the future as it could avoid the disappointment that has been caused by third parties revealing information. With that said, there isn’t much longer to wait until the console launches so Sony may stick to its current strategy.
