Xbox Game Pass Game The Gunk Gets New 4K Gameplay Trailer

Earlier today, the Gamescom 2021 Xbox stream featured several new video game trailers for players to see. One of the games that was revealed on the Xbox stream was The Gunk, a game developed by Thunderful, the creators behind the SteamWorld series.

The Gunk was previously announced last year in July 2020 to be released on the Xbox Game Pass and other Xbox platforms. The first reveal trailer showed off the main character Rani as she encounters the titular gunk on a mysterious alien planet. The new trailer shows more gameplay and the release window for the game is this December and it will release day one on the Xbox Game Pass.

The new gameplay trailer for The Gunk on Xbox highlights the progress the developer Thunderful has made since last year. The trailer shows Rani traveling to the alien planet and discovering the mysterious "gunk" on the planet in a dense jungle. It shows the area covered in the mysterious substance as it transforms the planet's flora and fauna into monstrous versions of themselves.

The trailer provides gameplay of Rani using her power-glove to suck up the gunk around her as she talks with her partner Becks. While doing so, the barren locations revert to their original natural states, visually contrasting how the planet looks before and after the gunk is gone. The trailer shows off more locations, including some alien ruins and active tall structures. It also provides glimpses of several enemies players will face in the game.

Afterward, a post from Xbox was released that provided more details about The Gunk from Thunderful's Game Director Ulf Hartelius. In the post, Hartelius said The Gunk uses Unreal Engine 4, mainly because it provides new graphical tools for the developers to use for the game's development. With it, Thunderful was able to add its own tech to help bring the titular gunk to life.

Hartelius said Thunderful's goal from the beginning was to give the gunk its own life, to have it be a mesmerizing visual presence in the game. He stated that after partnering with Microsoft, the developers wanted to do something different than the 2D SteamWorld series and went with The Gunk as Thunderful's first 3D project. It will be a story-driven sci-fi game that uses the Smart Delivery feature for support on all Xbox platforms.

According to the post, Xbox One players can expect "a stable 30fps experience" when playing the game. Players with the Xbox Series X/S or a high-end PC will be able to experience the art and visuals of The Gunk with a "smooth 60fps gameplay experience at up to 4K resolution."

The Gunk releases in December 2021 for PC, Xbox Game Pass, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
