Yesterday, rumours began circulating that Warner Bros. was looking to trim down its gaming division. According to a document seen by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, NetherRealm Studios and TT Games were no longer considered “in the scope” of the publisher’s future, and were looking for potential buyers.
However, a spokesperson says this is not the case. In a statement to TheGamer, Remi Sklar from Warner Bros. Games explains that both companies are to remain with the entertainment giant, even through its ongoing merger.

“I can confirm NetherRealm Studios and TT Games will continue to remain a part of Warner Bros. Games, and all are included in the Warner Media Discovery merger”, explains Sklar. The company says it has nothing more to add on how alleged documents on a potential sale got out, or how the rumours began.
It is possible that the documents Corden referred to are legitimate, and it's simply a case of Warner Bros. shifting its strategy since it was drafted. Of course, one reason for that may be the rumoured Marvel fighting game NetherRealm is supposedly working on, as that is likely to be a big win for the studio.
As for TT Games, this studio is best known for the immensely popular Lego series of games. Corden speculated that Warner Bros. might not be pleased with how it has to share profits with the original rights holders, but with cinemas reopening around the world, the potential for Lego to remain relevant with its film lineup looks positive.
While 2021’s Mortal Kombat film may have fallen short of expectations, that can largely be put down to the pandemic. While it fell front off the leaderboards for highest grossing films of the year, it nevertheless had an impressive opening weekend, at a time when many cinemas across Europe were still closed.
Regardless, it’s been a turbulent year for Mortal Kombat fans. The aforementioned film premiered in April, and another animated movie was confirmed for August of this year, titled Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. However, there was also the news that Mortal Kombat 11 would not be received anymore DLC, as NetherRealm shifts its focus to the next project.
