Covid-19 Impact on Development?
The Warhammer franchise has been the subject of major video games in the past, and Fatshark, a Swedish video game developer, has released many gems using the IP such as Warhammer: Vermintide and Warhammer: End Times amongst other game. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has put a strain on companies worldwide as many have had to adjust their workflows and working from home may lead to issues in the video game development process. Today, in a statement by Martin Wahund, CEO and co-founder of Fatshark, the company has officially announced that they have made the decision to delay the release of Warhammer 40,000 Darktide to the Spring of 2022.
In its statement, the company noted, “We have a responsibility to deliver the best game we possibly can, and frankly, we need to accomplish this goal. It’s no secret that building a game during a pandemic is a challenge and we are not immune to this.” The statement went on to indicate that the company is using the extra time to focus on the game’s quality and invest in more systems to support Darktide following its release.
Warhammer 40,000 Darktide was officially announced in July 2020 and much like Vermintide, Fatshark’s other project, the game gives players the opportunity to mow down waves of enemies in the hive city of Tertium. The game will be a four player co-op experience. This time however, players will be armed with machine guns to deal with hordes of enemies.
The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has once again struck a cord in video game development as it has affected the release of other games such as Resident Evil Re:Verse and Sifu.
