Sony Confirms Studio Acquisition Was to Help With PlayStation PC Ports

In early July 2021, Sony announced that it purchased Nixxes Software, a studio that primarily ports titles released on consoles to PC. At the time, the head of PlayStation Studios, Hermen Hulst, claimed that Sony made the Nixxess purchase with the idea of having the studio improve the in-house technical capabilities of PlayStation Studios. However, because of Nixxes' reputation, onlookers theorized that Sony actually made the purchase to prepare for porting more PlayStation exclusive titles over to PC.

Last year, Sony decided to switch up its practices regarding PlayStation exclusives. To a great deal of controversy, it recently released the critically-acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn on PC, believing that it would be a great marketing tactic. The idea assumes that any PC gamers who enjoyed the title for the first time would consider buying a PlayStation to play other exclusives and sequels. As a result, it released its second PlayStation exclusive on PC, Days Gone, only a few months ago.

Judging by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan's latest comment on the Nixxes purchase, it seems the marketing tactic is performing well. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Ryan's comments confirm that Sony did indeed purchase Nixxes Studios to help it create PC ports for even more PlayStation exclusive games. Essentially, Ryan states that Sony's happy with its efforts to port PlayStation exclusives to PC and that the company looks forward to working with Nixxes to expand its library on the platform.

Of course, any PlayStation exclusives planned for PC won't arrive until a few years after the games' initial release. For instance, in the case of Horizon Zero Dawn, the game arrived on PC three years after Sony released it on PlayStation. It also arrived right on the heels of the announcement of the now-delayed Horizon Forbidden West sequel, playing into Sony's plan. If PC fans of the game want to play Forbidden West when it releases — if at all — they'll need to buy a PlayStation.

With that in mind, anyone looking forward to playing PlayStation exclusives on the PC should only expect older titles. At the moment, the next exclusive to hit PC seems to be Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. An investor relations document released back in May listed the title as an upcoming PC release along with Days Gone. Since Days Gone did, in fact, release on PC, Uncharted 4 is almost guaranteed to be the next in line, but PlayStation fans will just have to wait and see.
