A fan has avoided a ‘modpocalypse’ with the new PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Skyrim, thanks to being given the game early.
In keeping with a worrying number of other games this week – which is not a good sign in terms of publisher confidence in their products – copies of Skyrim Anniversary Edition were not sent out to press ahead of time, and there are currently no reviews of it online.
Thankfully, Bethesda did send an early copy to one of the game’s most talented modders, who was able to avoid what he calls a ‘modpocalypse’ – which would’ve stopped the game working with most fan-made mods and expansions.
The modding scene is one of the main reasons Skyrim has remained so popular over the last 10 years, and modder extrwi has described on Reddit how he helped prepare a fix that will ensure that existing mods still work with the new version of the game.
‘In an attempt to avert the part of the modpocalypse that I can control, I’ve been spending all of my free time for the past week and a half or so getting ready, and made it just about an hour before the update was pushed’, said extrwi.
A new version of extrwi’s modding tool Skyrim Script Extender is the saviour of the situation and there are warnings that, because everything’s been done in a hurry, it may not be entirely reliable, but the situation is definitely not as bad as it was looking before today.

How much is Skyrim Anniversary Edition and its upgrade?
Skyrim Anniversary Edition is a remaster for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It’s timed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the game but, more importantly, it’s the first time it’s ever been on the next gen consoles.
The only new content is a fishing mini-game but, thanks to extrwi, you do get increased support for fan mods, higher resolution options and a more stable frame rate.
On its own it costs £47.99 for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 but if you already have the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 versions then it costs £15.99 to upgrade, so… not free.
