Developer Bethesda has revealed a big gameplay and performance update, and it sounds exciting.

Bethesda’s first new IP in 25 years was released to mixed reviews earlier this year, but work on the Xbox exclusive is continuing, with developer Bethesda promising to make new additions and improvements.

Although Starfield has revealed some unexpected secrets in recent weeks fans are still upset that basic things, like city maps, aren’t included in the game.

However, a big, new update is now promised for ‘early next year’, including an unspecified new travel system.

Bethesda announced its plans for the new patch on Reddit, where the developer said it’s reading all the feedback and is ‘hard at work on many of new features you asked for.’

‘From city maps, to mod support, to all new ways of travelling (stay tuned!). These will be rolling out with a regular cadence of fixes and updates we expect to have roughly every six weeks,’ it said.

Bethesda also said it’s sorting out quest fixes and improving overall performance in Starfield:

‘Expect an update early next year that will include a large number of ‘in-progress’ quest fixes as well as FSR3 and XeSS.’

Mod support is no surprise, as modding is very popular in Bethesda’s other titles, such as Skyrim, and has always been part of the plan. Meanwhile, the lack of city maps always seemed like a weird omission, that made the sci-fi setting seem considerably lower tech than the current day.

Exactly what kind of travel they are introducing is unclear, so it could be something to do with space travel or some kind of ground vehicle. It could even be Star Trek style teleportation, but at the moment there’s no way to tell.

Bethesda also just released a hot fix, which serves to stop the game crashing in some playthroughs and removing the ‘pet asteroid that would follow some players through space.’

It’s previously been implied that support for Starfield will continue for many years and that, like Skyrim, there’ll be at least a couple of expansions – but so far there’s no indication of what they might involve.
