A Hades Sequel Will Not Happen Anytime Soon, According To Interview

Despite its 2018 launch, Hades is still considered by many to be one of the greatest games today. It’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it has won several awards, including Best Game award at the Game Developers Conference towards the end of July this year. Despite all the love it’s getting, though, it seems that we won’t be seeing a sequel any time soon—if at all.

In an interview with NME, Greg Kasavin—a writer and designer for Supergiant Games—responded with a simple “I don’t know” when asked if Hades was going to be a stand-alone game like previous titles the company has released. Kasavin goes on to explain:

We have never known in the past what comes next. We never plan our next game until we’re done with the one that we’re currently working on. And I think part of the reason is that there’s a little superstition around that for our team because we want to make sure that we’re fully committed to the thing that we’re currently working on instead of, you know, counting our chickens before they hatch.

This confirms that at this point, there are currently no plans for a Hades sequel, and certainly nothing in the works. But considering Supergiant’s history of not making direct sequels, it seems there could be more to this than only wanting to work on one game at a time. Kasavin explains that Hades was heavily influenced and inspired by the game Pyre, and so a game that comes after Hades would likely be inspired by it, even if not a direct sequel. In his words, “I can say whatever we do next will be heavily informed by our work experience with Hades – but that doesn’t guarantee much of anything about the form it’ll take.”

While this seems to imply that the chances of getting a follow-up story on Zagreus are quite slim, we at least know that whatever title comes next has a decent chance at maintaining some of the qualities that make Hades such a great game.
