All of the Final Fantasy Games Coming to PlayStation Now Explained

Ever since the release of Final Fantasy 7 on PlayStation 1, the Final Fantasy brand has been closely tied to PlayStation. This continues to this day as the upcoming Final Fantasy 16 is a timed PS5 exclusive game, plus a slew of classic Final Fantasy titles are making their way to the PlayStation Now subscription service.

It was recently confirmed that five classic Final Fantasy games are coming to PlayStation Now. These include the three PS1-era Final Fantasy games as well as two of the PS2-era FF titles. It's possible that even more Final Fantasy games will make their way to PlayStation Now in future, but fans of the franchise should be kept plenty busy by the new PlayStation Now offerings set to be added over the course of the next five months.

Final Fantasy 7

Not to be confused with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the original Final Fantasy 7 is making its way to PlayStation Now starting September 7. Granted, this isn't exactly the same as the PlayStation 1 game from the 90s; this is an enhanced version of Final Fantasy 7 that includes some graphical updates and some major quality-of-life improvements. Among these quality-of-life improvements are the ability to speed up the game so players can fast-forward through the grinding and turn-based battles, allowing them to enjoy it for its story or other elements if they so desire.

Final Fantasy 7 is the story of Cloud Strife and AVALANCHE as they rally against the Shinra organization. Cloud is hired by AVALANCHE as a mercenary as they carry out their eco-terrorist activities, and he is reunited with childhood friend Tifa in the process. Along the way, Cloud and the gang come into conflict with the intimdiating and incredibly dangerous Sephiroth, which leads to one of the most shocking moments in gaming history.

Final Fantasy 7 is still hailed today as an absolute classic of the genre and one of the best Final Fantasy games. There is a reason Square Enix has focused so much of its attention on FF7 nostalgia and why it's gotten a full-blown remake over other titles in the Final Fantasy series.

Final Fantasy 8

Final Fantasy 8 on PlayStation Now features the same quality of life improvements as Final Fantasy 7, and PS Now subscribers will be able to see it all for themselves once the game is added to the service in October. Anyone looking forward to playing Final Fantasy 8 for the first time or dedicated fans that played the original PS1 version are excited to revisit Squall's adventure can do so when FF8 hits PlayStation Now on October 5.

Final Fantasy 8 is one of the more divisive entries in the series, yet it still earned widespread critical acclaim at the time of its original release. Final Fantasy 8's Draw system has its critics as well as its fans, but many have been drawn to the game's memorable cast of characters and engaging story. Final Fantasy 8 sees Squall Leonhart and his companions squaring off against Ultimecia, an evil and powerful sorceress.

The meat and potatoes of Final Fantasy 8 is still the traditional turn-based FF combat and high stakes story, but players can also check out the Triple Triad card mini-game if they want to do something else to pass the time.

Final Fantasy 9

Whereas Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 8 blend sci-fi elements with fantasy setting, Final Fantasy 9 takes the franchise back to its roots by fully embracing a medieval fantasy setting. In Final Fantasy 9, players take on the role of the thief Zidane Tribal, who finds himself on a quest to take down Queen Brahne of Alexandria, along with her daughter Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, Vivi, and other characters.

Final Fantasy 9 comes to PlayStation Now on November 2.

Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster

On December 7, PlayStation Now subscribers will leave the PS1-era Final Fantasy games behind in favor of the first PS2 Final Fantasy game. Final Fantasy 10 will be available to play on PlayStation Now along with Final Fantasy 10-2, its direct sequel. This is the HD collection of the games, and so this is truly the definitive way to experience Final Fantasy 10 and Final Fantasy 10-2.

Final Fantasy 10 is the story of Tidus, who seemingly finds himself transported far into the future, with the world as he knew it completely wiped out. Like other Final Fantasy games, Tidus gathers party members on his adventure, and they all team up in an effort to fight back a threat known as "Sin." The plot is a lot more complex than it sounds on paper, with plenty of twists and turns to keep Final Fantasy engaged from the iconic opening all the way to the end credits.

Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age

Final Fantasy fans can ring in the new year with Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age when it hits PlayStation Now on January 4, 2022. The final Final Fantasy game in this influx of FF titles for the PS Now lineup, Final Fantasy 12 is the latest main series Final Fantasy title that released for the PlayStation 2. It features an open world and a completely revamped combat system, helping it stand far apart from its predecessors. These innovations made Final Fantasy 12 somewhat divisive back in the day but it's still generally recognized as yet another high-quality entry in Square Enix's legendary Final Fantasy franchise.
