Apex Legends Datamine Reveals New Grenade | Game Rant

Apex Legends has seen numerous content updates since its launch in 2019, but throwables have been left relatively untouched. This could change soon, though, as a dataminer has revealed a potential throwable weapon type that could significantly impact player tactics in the game.

The main draw of Apex Legends is its battle royale action, as players drop into a large map in groups of two or three to scavenge for resources, survive, and battle other squads. The game has seen many mechanical overhauls, character additions, and gameplay changes, and Season 10 has brought some of the biggest adjustments yet.

The unused models and code found in an Apex Legends update were documented by content creator Shrugtal, and reveal a new 3D model for the device when held in a player's hand. The cryo grenade is very similar in shape to the existing thermite grenade, with a cylindrical design, but takes on a blue color and is still in a very early form with flat textures. The datamine also reveals a UI element entry for "cryo_freeze_progress," which could indicate that it is intended as an area-of-effect device.

Shrugtal goes on to theorize about what effects the cryo grenade may have, but as of right now it is too early to tell exactly how the device will function. Respawn has not officially announced the item yet, and given that the visuals of the item imply that it is still in development, it could be a long time before it shows up fully in-game. With the recent launch of Apex Legends Season 10, though, players still have a wealth of new content to master, so the cryo grenade is not an urgent addition.

For now, information is unclear, and a lot of room for speculation is left open. Apex Legends has not received a new grenade type since launch, so adding another grenade could be an interesting way to expand the combat possibilities. The UI element having "freeze" in its name could indicate that the grenade will have some kind of temperature-related effect, like slowing down player movement. If so, cryo grenades could provide a major advantage in combat considering the heavy focus on movement in Apex Legends.

With every Apex Legends update comes dataminers looking to find new content coming to the game, and the cryo grenade is just one of a few recent finds. Just a few days ago, another dataminer discovered a Supreme-influenced outfit for Mirage. Only time will tell if the recent updates hide even more undiscovered secrets.

Apex Legends is out now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
