Getting to play Battlefield 2042 for the first time just got even more complicated as EA reveal a new trial via Game Pass and EA Play.

Battlefield 2042 is due to launch on November 19. Except it’s actually November 11 if you buy the more expensive Gold or Ultimate Editions. Alternatively, you can play it from November 12, for 10 hours, if you’re already a member of EA Play – which itself is free with Xbox Game Pass.

EA has clearly gone all out to make that as complicated as possible but if you do have access to EA Play few are going to complain, especially as it gives you a chance try before you buy at a point where most people won’t have started playing the game yet.

The free trail was announced alongside a new blog entry and a trailer for Battlefield Portal, the impressive sounding game editor that incorporates elements from multiple previous Battlefield titles.

What wasn’t clear before is that Battlefield Portal is being developed solely by Ripple Effect Studios, who were previously known as DICE LA, so not DICE in Sweden – which explains why they’ve had the time to make such a substantial new mode.

As well Battlefield 2042 itself, Portal will allow you to mix and match maps, weapons, and vehicles from Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 3, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – with the implication that elements from other older games will also be added over time as DLC.

Portal allows you to not only edit the physical objects in a match but also the rules that govern them, which has the potential to make it the most interesting part of the whole Battlefield 2042 package.

It’s billed as one of the three main modes of the game, with the others being the standard multiplayer and the recently unveiled PvPvE mode Hazard Zone.

Battlefield 2042 will be released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on… well you’ve seen how complicated the release date is already.
