Battlefield 2042 Won’t Have a Single Player Campaign or Battle Royale

EA have lifted the lid on Battlefield 2042, promising the series’ biggest multiplayer outing yet- but there’s a catch. It’s only a multiplayer outing. While speaking with Eurogamer, the game’s design director Daniel Berlin has confirmed that the shooter won’t have a single player campaign.

“I think that’s just something that enables us to really lean into what we are best at,” he said. “If you look at the DNA of the studio, what we’ve been doing for so long, we just said you know what, we’re not going to have a traditional single-player campaign this time around, but we’re going to put all that emphasis and all those resources into building depth into the multiplayer. Because that is what we do best.”

Battlefield 2042’s setting sees the world on the brink of war, driven to crises due to climate change, with the United States and Russia over food and fuel shortages. Even though there is no campaign, Berlin says that with that setting and with the newly introduced Specialists system, the game will have a narrative nonetheless.

2042 is not a game without narrative,” he said. “You still have a narrative driven world, that’s something that you will see through the eyes of the specialists that we’re introducing. As we go through the live service, and the seasons, we’ll introduce new Specialists, and you’ll see how the world evolves through the eyes of the Specialists that we have.”

Meanwhile, Berlin also confirmed that Battlefield 2042 will not have a battle royale mode.

“Battle royale is definitely something that is exceptionally popular right now,” he said. “We don’t have any battle royale plan at this point, but we do have other experiences within the game that we can’t talk about which we are super excited for.”

Battlefield 2042 launches on October 22 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Details have also been revealed on the game’s pricing and its Gold and Ultimate Editions. Read more on that through here.
