Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Adding Flamethrower in Season 5

Though Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans have plenty of scorestreaks to use against their opponents, Treyarch seems determined to add to that number. In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 5, the Flamethrower will be joining the scorestreak lineup.

Intriguingly, the Flamethrower scorestreak was leaked by Treyarch itself back in Season 1. While promoting the return of the iconic multiplayer map Raid, an official screenshot was released that saw a player burning an enemy by the map’s pool. Ever since that screenshot made the rounds, fans have been expecting to see the Flamethrower added to their arsenals. Now, nearly eight months later, it will finally be making its debut in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Fans of Treyarch’s games should be more than familiar with the Flamethrower, as it featured in many of the studio’s Call of Duty titles. If the Hand Cannon scorestreak is any indication, fans can expect the Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War version to function like the one seen in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Wielded by the specialist Outbreak, the Purifier saw any enemies that were touched by the flame dying seconds after they were ignited. While it boasts a decent enough range, players will want to get to close to be effective.

Treyarch confirmed that this crowd control weapon will function like other weapon-based scorestreaks, meaning that if it is equipped and fired, it will be removed from the player's inventory upon death. This means that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fans will need to be strategic when it comes to their time with the Flamethrower, as a misuse could easily result in a wasted scorestreak. While an exact cost is unknown, Treyarch has confirmed that it is not a “higher-cost scorestreak.” As such, players can expect it to have a low-mid range price.

Another thing of note about the Flamethrower is that it will also be making its way to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies. Described as being a cut above the Combat Bow, the Flamethrower should be able to deal some decent damage against the undead. It could prove particularly useful in a smaller map like Mauer Der Toten, though players will likely be better off using a Chopper Gunner in Outbreak’s massive regions.

While it remains to be seen if Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s leaked Attack Dogs will come in Season 6, fans should be pleased that Season 5 is bringing a new streak to mess around with. While it may not be as devastating as the high-tier options, it could still get a lot of use.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
