Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s Leaked Content Should Be The New Norm

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, in many ways, is exactly what players would expect from a Call of Duty game. It includes a singleplayer campaign, a co-operative Zombies mode, and a traditional multiplayer experience. While the campaign and Zombies do change things up in some interesting ways, the three-pillar structure remains. Further, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War keeps the same six-Season structure that was seen with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2019.

However, while Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War does have a familiar setup, that could be changing soon. The game will supposedly be getting extra support beyond its planned Seasons, essentially creating a second year of content for players to enjoy. With Call of Duty usually only supporting its games for a year after launch, apart from rare exceptions like Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Zombies Chronicles DLC, this is a big deal. However, it should be the new standard for the franchise, with games beyond Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War getting this same type of treatment.

The rumors about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War getting additional support began with a claim from reputable insider Tom Henderson. According to the leaker, Activision is pleased with the game’s post-launch revenue, with profits being high enough that additional content is worth pursuing. According to Henderson, it will be the “most supported” entry in the series when it comes to extra content releasing after its cycle has ended. Essentially, the game could be receiving new content updates long after Call of Duty 2021 makes its debut.

While Henderson did not specify what form these extra additions would be taking, another insider has added to this rumor. According to @TheMW2Ghost, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has 12 more maps ready to be released. Based on the previous Seasonal formats, players can expect three of these maps to debut in Season 5. Additionally, Season 6 will likely get three more maps, leaving six maps without a specified content drop. As such, these extra maps could be spaced out throughout 2022.

Six extra maps is a lot, and that is not accounting for any possible Zombies content that could come due to this change of plans. With @TheMW2Ghost hinting that there is also another map remake in the works that is not Yemen or Plaza, it seems like this bonus map count has the potential to hit seven. While these leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, it is a good sign that two reputable insiders are suggesting that there is more Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War content on the way. With two Seasons’ worth of maps supposedly ready to go, it seems like fans of the latest Black Ops title have a lot to look forward to.

While it is great to know that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be getting plenty of support, this news could sting a bit for fans of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The 2019 reboot of Infinity Ward’s iconic subseries was well-received, with many enjoying its more methodical approach to gameplay. Unfortunately, the game did not get much extra support after Season 6 dropped, with Activision instead focusing its attention on Call of Duty: Warzone and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

Only a bit of extra content came for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, which saw Drainage and Al-Raab Airbase added to the game. However, these maps were accidentally added by Infinity Ward, with the developer briefly removing them before bringing them back to the game’s multiplayer. Alongside this strange turn of events, these maps received no fanfare, with the teasers and trailers seen for the game’s post-launch Seasons being completely absent. As such, not only were fans caught completely off guard by the addition of the two maps, but some did not know they were added at all. Those that have enjoyed their addition have been unsure if more maps would come, though it seems like the game’s support has indeed reached an end.

The bigger issue with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was not just that it stopped being supported, but that gamers felt as if it became an advertisement for Call of Duty: Warzone. On PC and consoles, the application’s image was changed, prioritizing the battle royale game while hiding the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare logo in the corner. The game’s messages of the day also became focused on advertisements for the newer Call of Duty titles, leaving many Modern Warfare fans to feel abandoned once the newer game had released. However, if Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s extra content becomes common practice, situations like this one would not happen again.

It is no secret that Call of Duty titles have a different feel depending on the developer behind each title. As such, some gamers prefer the style of Infinity Ward or Treyarch, while others enjoy the more experimental titles of Sledgehammer Games. The different settings only add to this, as gamers can look to the franchise that appeals to them most. For those who may love Cold War-era weaponry, a modern setting may not be as interesting. Likewise, not everyone is into World War 2-era first person shooters.

With this in mind, it makes sense for Call of Duty titles to get more content beyond their first year. With Call of Duty games on a three-year development cycle, each developer could support their game until their next one releases. For example, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is expected to debut in 2022, meaning that Infinity Ward’s next game would be set for 2025. As such, players would have a two-year gap between Modern Warfare entries based on the current setup. That is a long wait for fresh content from that time period and from Infinity Ward, so filling that gap with more maps, modes, and weapons would make sense.

This would fix the franchise’s Call of Duty Zombies problem too. While other developers have tried to replicate Treyarch’s success, the developer that created the mode has consistently delivered the best iterations of it. If each Treyarch Call of Duty were to get more support, other developers would not need to worry about making a lackluster Zombies mode. Instead, the most recent Treyarch game could receive fresh Zombies maps every few months, keeping players hooked until Treyarch’s next release a few years later. Giving each Call of Duty game more content ensures that several are active at the same time, letting players stick with the one that appeals to them the most. Whether it is Zombies or multiplayer, every kind of Call of Duty fan could benefit from this approach.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
