Comic Book Writers Continue To Speak Out About Unfair Pay From Marvel Studios

At the origin of almost every Marvel & DC movie, the storyline and beloved characters belonged to the writers before it would ever make it on the big screen. The only time comic book creator’s names are even mentioned is at the ending credits in tiny print, "based on the comic book whose author is blank." The lack of honor and recognition seems to also be playing a role in writers wanting to speak out. Facing the facts, Marvel and DC owe almost all of their success and popularity to these comic book creators – and yet testimonies of unfair payment continue to circulate.

Most notably, comic writer Ed Brubaker and his partner Steve Epting, who originally created the Winter Soldier have expressed their dissatisfaction. Brubaker told the Guardian that he sometimes feels "a bit sick to [his] stomach" when fans email him asking for comments about The Falcon And the Winter Soldier. However, he noted that his MArvel characters have drawn readers to some of his other work. The problem is that Marvel can take one superhero and off of that, create a web of multiple different avenues to gain profit.

Marvel and DC have merchandise, films, series, action figures – the list goes on for the endless possibilities in which to draw in revenue. Brubaker stated that the most he and Epting received in response to this grossing profit is a mere “thank you.” Now, comic creators seem to be shorted when it comes to the profession altogether and it has remained stagnant. The bare minimum that these writers are set up to receive doesn’t go beyond an upfront fee and copyright credentials.

The Guardian also reported that when a writer’s character is highlighted in a film, they receive a standard $5,000 and an invitation to the premiere. Brubaker goes to even further verify that Marvel Studios without a doubt has the means to not only pay writers properly – but also to give them the respect and honor they deserve.

Brubaker also made a statement revealing that he has been paid way more for brief cameos in the films than his actual creations. Marvel has the means and it’s quite baffling as to why this unequal pay for comic book writers is still being tolerated. Marvel showcases and gives much more money to the famous actors who wouldn’t have a role if it weren’t for these writers. Hopefully, Brubaker and other writers speaking out will incite change and growth.
