Control: The Enemy Within Mission Walkthrough

Jesse Faden went to The Federal Bureau Of Control doors looking for her long-lost brother, Dylan, who had been kidnapped by the Bureau when they were children. However, once inside, she'll learn that things aren’t as simple as she thought they would be, and now, acting as the FBC director, she'll have to fight the evil force that invaded the place.

Equipped only with the Service Weapon and Polaris' Help, Control's protagonist will have to venture through The Oldest House to cleanse the place from the Hiss infection. While her main priority will be finding out what happened to Dylan, multiple side missions will give you a better notion of what's going on inside this place and just how powerful the Hiss actually is. One of these side missions is The Enemy Within, a side quest where you'll inevitably come face to face with one of the game's hidden bosses, the Anchor. Here are our recommended tips and tricks to complete this mission.

How To Unlock The Enemy Within Side Mission

To be able to play this side mission, you will first have to complete another one called A Matter of Time. To start that one, go over to the Containment sector and go right ahead into the Logistic area where you'll hear Horowitz calling for help; go ahead and talk to him. The A Matter of Time side mission will have you solving puzzles, visiting a familiar motel, and fighting some hiss-infected enemies.

Anyway, after finishing A Matter of Time, The Enemy Within will begin right after. This time you'll have to go to the Sealed Threshold Corridor in the Containment sector and investigate the Safe Room that's in the area. Once inside, fly towards the levitating anchor that's in the middle of the room.

  • Tip: since this mission requires Jesse to use her levitate ability, you'll need to unlock it first before attempting to complete The Enemy Within side mission. The levitate ability is unlocked during the main mission, My Brother's Keeper.

How To Find The Safe Room

Upon getting The Enemy Within side mission, fast travel to the Sealed Threshold entrance checkpoint. Once there, go down the stairs that are on your left and turn to the left to enter the room with many clocks inside it (seriously, it almost looks like a sea of clocks).

In this area, go up the stairs and into the left entrance. You'll now be in another open area filled with clocks. You'll be able to find the Safe Room on the right hand side of the room, towards the "end wall" of the area. You'll know it's the right place because it'll say "Shelter" in big white letters — the door is open and has a few blood splashes right at the entrance.

Head inside the room where you'll notice, that, surprise! it also has clocks in it, keep walking until you start hearing a strange sound and see an anchor in the distance, levitate towards it.

  • Tip: before going towards the anchor, look left, and you'll see a loot crate that you can open to get the Weapon Armor Damage mod. This one can be used with any Service Weapon form and what it does is increase the damage you do to enemy armor.

Once you get close to the levitating anchor it will slowly drop down. In its place will now be a boss called the Anchor. Along with other enemies like the Former or Essej, this is one of the game's missable bosses. The Anchor looks like a big black floating sphere with shifting and pulsating shapes; sometimes, it will open up to pour clocks out of itself (so now you know where all those clocks you saw earlier came from).

How To Defeat The Anchor

The room where you'll fight this boss has four platforms in it. Jesse can get to each one of them using her levitate skill. Be careful, as falling to the pit below will result in instant death. Also, this boss will rotate through each one of the platforms following a clockwise pattern, making things a tad more complicated.

What you have to do to defeat the Anchor is to use Jesse's telekinesis ability to grab the clocks that are lying around, wait till the boss opens its "mouth", then throw the clocks, hitting the big red orb inside. However, you could also use the Service Weapon to hit the red orb as well.

  • Tip: You have to be very careful when aiming the clocks. If you're not fast enough, the Anchor will attack by vomiting a lot of clocks towards Jesse and hurting her.

After you've hit the Anchor a few times, it will add a new attack: summoning hiss-infected enemies similar to the ones you've fought while exploring the FBC.

You have two options here, either throw clocks at them or use the Service Weapon to fight off the additional enemies so they can't hurt you. Likewise, you can pay attention to the boss's pattern so you can move fast enough between platforms while avoiding the enemies and still hitting the red orb inside the Anchor's "mouth."

Keep hitting the orb until the Anchor is defeated. Afterward, the ship's anchor you saw before the boss fight started will return and land on the platform Jesse is on. Interact with it to cleanse it, and you'll complete the mission.

The Enemy Within Rewards

Upon containing the anchor and completing the mission, you'll receive the following rewards:

  • A case file called Anchor Procedure, where you'll learn where this anchor came from.
  • Two materials, Entropic Echo and Untapped Potential (you can use these to upgrade the Service Weapon).
  • 3 ability points.
  • The personal mod Shield Efficiency (this mod decreases the amount of energy it costs Jesse to use her Shield skill).

Also, completing The Enemy Within Side Mission will unlock one of Control's hidden trophies: Living Archetypes.
