Cyberpunk 2077 Isn’t Wet Enough Anymore, Apparently

Cyberpunk 2077's latest major patch has been live for a while now, and players have started to notice that the game doesn't look as wet as it used to.

Nine months on from its release, CDPR's quest to fix Cyberpunk 2077 continues. The game has come an incredibly long way in that time, even returning to the PlayStation Store after getting delisted by Sony. It's still recommended that you don't play the game on a base PS4 even though an upgraded PS5 version is yet to be released, but if you're willing to take the risk then go for it.

The game has been improved upon further since it was re-added to the PS Store via its recent 1.3 patch. The update addressed a bunch more issues and included Cyberpunk's very first DLC. A new car and a new outfit. Minor, but it's something. What the patch also appears to have done is make the game less wet, as has been pointed out by a number of players on Reddit and highlighted by Kotaku.

“The car in 1.23 is much more ‘wet’ and in 1.3 it’s more like a satin or matte finish,” someone commented on a clip comparing Cyberpunk before and after the 1.3 patch. The drier look doesn't just apply to the cars either. The roads have fewer puddles and it just seems to have been raining less in Night City recently. We are at the tail end of the summer, so it sort of makes sense.

This isn't a change brought about by real-life seasons, though. Those who have noticed Cyberpunk's change in wetness have been guessing why it might have happened. The leading theory seems to be that the removal of puddles and other reflective surfaces goes hand in hand with the boost to the game's frame rate brought about by the 1.3 patch.

Kotaku actually reached out to CDPR and got an answer. The studio ackowledged that Cyberpunk looks a lot drier following the latest patch and that its seemingly sought-after wet look will return in a later update. No word on why exactly the game was made to look less wet in the first place. It's like the Spider-Man puddles all over again. Just add some water stickers to Cyberpunk's photo mode and be done with it.
