Daybreak Acquires Alien Shooter Developer Cold Iron Studios

They're Comin' Outta the Walls!

A Daybreak Cold Iron acqusition has been announced. Daybreak Game Company (Planetside 2, H1Z1) has acquired Cold Iron Studios, the developers of a mysterious upcoming shooter set in the Alien universe.

"We’re incredibly proud and excited to be part of the Daybreak family," said Cold Iron Studios co-founder Craig Zinkievich in the announcement. "Daybreak and Cold Iron share the same passion and long history for delivering action-packed multiplayer games for audiences worldwide. In combining our decades of experience developing and launching globally successful multiplayer titles, we’re destined to make great games together."

Cold Iron Studios announced that they were developing a new shooter set in the Alien universe back in 2018. This game will be coming to PC and consoles at some point in the future, but details are still pretty light two years later.

What Does the Daybreak Cold Iron Acqusition Mean for the Alien Shooter?

Cold Iron Studios has been working on the Alien shooter for quite a while now, but things have been relatively quiet. Daybreak Game Company acquiring them could bring some changes to the company, but they're not likely to be all that bad.

Daybreak, for its part, has had a few flops in recent years. Both Just Survive and Landmark were closed in the last five years, and upcoming titles Planetside Arena and EverQuest Next were canceled.

That said, Daybreak still has Z1 Battle Royale (formerly H1Z1), Planetside 2, and DC Universe Online still active and a long list of developed games under its belt. Despite the setbacks, it's still happily chugging along with a healthy library of active games.

Cold Iron's acquisition gives the fledgling developer something it might not have had on its own: stability. Making a multiplatform shooter set in an IP as beloved as Alien isn't an easy challenge and Daybreak is likely to bring the experience and resources necessary to get the game over the finish line. What this game might be (or when we'll get to play it) will remain, for now, a mystery.
