The chapters of Dead by Daylight continue onward with Chapter 17: Descend Beyond being the next one to come out. This chapter will include the DLC survivor, Felix Richter, and the DLC Killer, the Blight.

The Blight is not a licensed killer from an outside horror franchise and is an original character made for Dead by Daylight. Unlike other original killers, however, his existence has been hinted toward for years before his release, tying him heavily to the game’s lore.

Before becoming a killer under the watch of the Entity, the Blight was known as Talbot Grimes. He was a chemist from Scotland that got his start by experimenting with plants as a child. While his experiments had gotten to points where it endangered his life, he continued to be fascinated by the world around him and what lurked inside it.

After growing up, Grimes attended the London School of Medicine and was later hired by the British East India Company. His experimenting at his workplace led him to create a chemical that could increase the productivity of workers without the need of them resting in any capacity. This helped Grimes get a secret laboratory underneath a prison camp.

In his secret lab, Grimes would experiment on the prisoners and develop many kinds of drugs to be sold to those who wanted them. While some of the side-effects led to the users committing atrocities, Grimes simply ignored them to focus on his work. However, this would lead to his enemies attacking him and attempting to bury him alive in a mass grave of those killed by Grimes’ creations.

By a miracle, he was rescued by members of a school that studies other dimensions while posing as a monastery. In return for their help, Grimes helped the school using his own knowledge to further their own studies. He became tasked with finding a chemical in the human body known as “the soul chemical”. Grimes’ search became an obsession for him with even the members of the school becoming fearful of his pursuits. However, his search would be halted after the sudden collapse of the school. It is very possible that the school had discovered a way into the realm of the Entity at this point.

Grimes then awoke in an opium den surrounded by drug addicts. He then found himself being injected with something by a robed figure that would put his mind into a stupor. However, Grimes’ dedication to his research caused him to carve out his research into the walls and his body in order to not forget. However, the robed figure would whisper to him about a place that can be assumed to be the realm of the Entity. He was then eventually overwhelmed with the desire to study this land and was taken away into the setting of Dead by Daylight.

While in the Entity’s realm, Grimes became obsessed with the Pustula Flowers and the nectar they produce. He began to inject himself with the nectar to see the effects it would have on his body as well as capture the various killers to experiment on them as he has done to the prisoners in his normal life.

The killers that Grimes has confirmed to have experimented on according to in-game text include:

While Grimes is said to have participated in the trials in the past, it isn’t specified if he participated as a killer or a survivor at this point. However, it can be inferred that he was a survivor due to him showing a reluctance to wanting to participate in them. Jake Park would eventually find where Grimes was doing his experiments and steal various materials from the shack, including some items that serve as offerings for survivors.

The longer Grimes spent in the Entity’s realm, the more of his memories of the outside world began to vanish. However, he kept to his work and began to study the killers and how they worked even more closely. This included taking samples from some of them such as using the Plague’s bile. Grimes even felt a connection to the Doctor which caused some of his memories from the Entity’s Realm to bleed into his memories of the past.

Eventually, his lack of attachment to the trials causes the Entity to see Grimes as useless for feeding. This causes the Entity to put Grimes in another dimension known as the Void. The Void is where the Entity puts the husks of survivors and killers that no longer serve any useful purpose.

Before being sucked in, Grimes injects himself with a Pustula Serum that manages to save him from being trapped with the other lost souls. However, this would slowly start his descent in becoming a killer for the Entity instead of a survivor.

After becoming the Blight, Grimes’ face began to melt in a similar matter to the killers he previously experimented on. In a way seeming to taunt him, the Entity left a laboratory tag for Grimes in a way that replicates the tags that Grimes made for the other killers while studying them.

While hunting for survivors, Grimes is forced to keep injecting himself in order to keep up his strength and endurance. However, his willingness to participate in the trials seems to have increased due to him now being able to freely experiment on and take samples from the survivors during the trials.

The current status of Grimes could mean that other survivors have the potential to turn into killers themselves, turning against those they’ve previously worked alongside with. It could also be possible that Grimes is still researching ways of escaping from the Entity’s Realm completely as well.

Dead by Daylight is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, with PS5, Stadia, and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
