Designer Shows Off Prototype PS2 Packaging

Hock Wah Yeo's early prototypes for the PS2's case design have resurfaced, showing off a drastically different box design.

The post was originally released earlier this year by Phil Salvador over at The Obscuritory, before being noticed by Dr Social over on ResetEra. Phil Salvador's post focuses on the work of designer Hock Wah Yeo, who was known for making unique case designs, including a previously unseen prototype for the PlayStation 2.

The detailed post on The Obscuritory goes over some of the boxes that Hock Wah Yeo had designed and released, including a box for Prince of Persia, Spectre, and Iron Helix. Hock Wah Yeo was known for creating unique cases that stood out from the rest of the crowd, which is shown within the article. Most interesting of all is that the post also exclusively reveals a look at Hock Wah Yeo's work on a PS2 case design.

On the design, Phil Salvador said, "In this never-before-seen prototype, Yeo was working on an idea for a unique, distinctive package for PlayStation 2 games in the United States.1 Rather than following the standard DVD case shape, the box appears to be about the size of an index card, with the space for the disc protruding out of the top, like the games were so incredible that they couldn’t be confined to their packaging. It matches with Sony’s marketing campaign and imagery for the PlayStation 2 which suggested that the new console transcended reality, best encapsulated by the fact that they produced a commercial for the PlayStation 2 directed by David Lynch."

The design was never followed through with, which Phil details in the article, "During production of the prototype, the higher-ups at Sony Computer Entertainment in Japan stepped in and cancelled the project, preferring to use the standard DVD case design, which would have been significantly cheaper and easier to work with."

Even with this design never being followed through with, it's interesting to note that Sony went to Hock Wah Yeo to try and stand out from its competition with the PS2.
