Dragon Quest 12 Will Shape The Next "10 To 20 Years" Of The Series

Dragon Quest 12 is shaping up to be a very important game for the franchise, according to Square Enix president and CEO Yosuke Matusda.

In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Gematsu), Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda has explained that the recently announced Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate is "taking into account the next 10 to 20 years of the Dragon Quest series" hinting that the next Dragon Quest game may be a little bit different from what long time fans come to expect from the franchise.

Matsuda also explained that while Dragon Quest 12 will have the series' traditional image, there will be new additions in an effort to shake up the formula:

"There are parts that remain consistent with the traditional image of Dragon Quest, but new elements are also necessary. After all, as a brand we always need to innovate."

What this might mean for the future of Dragon Quest is still uncertain, but it's clear that Square Enix has big plans for Dragon Quest 12, and that the game could take the series in a new direction. Back when Dragon Quest 12 was announced in May, many were surprised by the dark and serious tone of the short teaser trailer, considering the series is fairly light-hearted and even silly at times.

It's possible that Square Enix wants to tell a darker story with Dragon Quest 12, although it's all just speculation at the moment as news about the game is very thin on the ground. With no announced release date and with the game's first reveal trailer being just a logo, it's likely that Dragon Quest 12 is still way off from seeing store shelves any time soon.

However, if you're itching for some more Dragon Quest in your life, you'll be pleased to know that Dragon Quest Builders 2 was recently added to Xbox Game Pass alongside a whole bunch of other games. Those with a Game Pass subscription can now download the game on Xbox for free until the game leaves the service in the future.
