Elex 2 Density Over Open World

Elex 2 developers at Piranha Bytes provided more details regarding the sequel moving forward and its strongest differences from the predecessor. The team decided not to chase the sheer size of an open world, but to make the territory much more filled with various types of content.

Elex 2 was quietly announced in June, blending with lots of louder E3 announcements. In a conversation with Wccftech, the team confirmed that the game is being created with player feedback in mind.

Elex 2 is an open-world old-school RPG, but the devs quickly realized the players are fed with enormous maps full of empty generic spaces. As such, there won’t be a bigger world in the Elex sequel. Instead, the devs aim for density and variety of activities in the game.

The most important addition to travel is the true flying system, allowing you to go anywhere on the map with your jetpack. Full aerial combat, like in Anthem or Marvel’s Avengers, will also be available for the players. You can shoot at your enemies from a distance or fight them in the air with melee weapons as well.

Another improvement is the combat system, which will give you more direct control and will become much more dynamic, flexible, and responsive. The game will offer a large selection of weapons, from bows and axes to rocket launchers and chainswords. More than 100 different enemies have been confirmed, in addition, Piranha Bytes has fully overhauled the AI of enemies and redone all animations from scratch.

In an RPG like Elex, it’s vital to give meaningful choices to the players. Initially, the team wanted to deliver importing saves from the first game to make all of the players’ actions matter. However, after analyzing Elex and its players, the devs found out that over 90 percent of them had chosen the canonical finale. Therefore, this option was abandoned early on to focus on other improvements. For instance, multiple endings for the follow-up, depending on what faction you joined, what companions you chose, and how you acted within the moral system.

THQ Nordic will publish Elex 2, coming to PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5 later this year.
