Elite Dangerous Odyssey Delayed On Consoles With New Launch Date

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey arrived in May bringing with it a new land-travel system allowing players to hoof it across brand new planets bearing all-new weapons. Unfortunately, it also brought a bunch of bugs and glitches that landed the expansion a "mostly negative" review on Steam.

To their credit, Frontier Developments were quick to acknowledge that they botched the release of Odyssey and promised fixes were coming. Frontier founder and CEO David Braben offered his personal apologies and assurances that Odyssey's launch issues were being taken "very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus."

A patch at the beginning of June went a long way to solving Odyssey's issues, with more bug fixes and visual improvements than we could even list in a single article. However, as work continues getting Odyssey to an ideal state, work has fallen behind getting Odyssey ready for its console debut.

Braben announced today on the Elite Dangerous forums that Odyssey's fall 2021 console release window would no longer be met.

"As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped," wrote Braben. "What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

"Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more.”

Odyssey’s console release has now been delayed indefinitely as Frontier focuses its efforts on improving Odyssey’s PC performance.

Response to the delay has been mixed, with some Elite Dangerous fans understanding and supporting the delay while others have been outright hostile. Braben asked for fans to remain "calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback."
