Following the departure of Far Cry’s creative director, it’s been claimed that the next game will be a games as a service title.
Only last month, it was believed that Far Cry 7 (or whatever the next game is called) would be a more online-oriented experience. Considering Ubisoft has already confirmed plans to release a live service Assassin’s Creed game, it’s easy to believe that the next Far Cry will follow suit.
According to GamesBeat’s Jeff Grubb, this is exactly the case. There aren’t any new details beyond that, but Grubb states that the next Far Cry will share a similar business model to Assassin’s Creed Infinity. This may be disappointing news to some, but it’s hardly surprising since Ubisoft has openly stated that it intends to focus more on ‘high-end free-to-play’ games.
This comes after news broke that Far Cry series creative director and executive producer Dan Hay is leaving Ubisoft this week. In a statement provided to GamesBeat, Ubisoft says ‘After more than 10 years at Ubisoft, Dan Hay has announced that he will be pursuing a new chapter in his professional life and he will be leaving on November 12.
‘While Dan has not announced where his path is taking him, we are confident that it will offer him the new challenges and experiences he seeks and deserves. We thank Dan for his many contributions over the years and wish him all the best for the future.
‘In the interim, the brand team will be led by Sandra Warren in Montréal as well as a highly capable team of producers and directors, in addition to continuing its collaborations with a number of other studios around the world.’

No reason has been given for Hay’s departure from the company, but he is the latest in a string of big-name employees to leave Ubisoft. In the past year alone, director Eric Baptizat, writer Darby McDevitt, and art director Raphael Lacoste (all of whom worked on the Assassin’s Creed series) left to join other studios.
Far Cry 6 received more mixed reviews than normal for a mainline entry in the series but there’s no suggestion so far that plans for the next game have been drastically changed as a result.
