The latest character to join Fortnite's expansive cast is Windwalker Echo, the character Epic used to showcase its Unreal Engine 5 demo over a year ago.
Fortnite has added so many people and characters from other franchises and walks of life that it has effectively become a virtual Funko Pop collection. Harley Quinn, Marshmello, Predator, and Lara Croft are just a few of the different people to have received their very own Fortnite skins and accompanying items such as backbling and pickaxes.
The latest addition to the Fortnite roster might be evidence that Epic is finally starting to run out of ideas. She's called Windwalker Echo, and there's a reason why you've probably never heard of her before. It's not because she's a Fortnite OG like Jonesy or Peely. It's because the only place Echo has ever been seen before is in Epic's tech demo for Unreal Engine 5.

The demo, which was shown off well over a year ago, starred Echo as she clambered up cliffsides and flew through canyons. She was never created to be in her own game, nor was the environment she traversed part of a future title. However, she now finds herself in Fortnite for some bizarre reason and looks pretty much the same as she did the demo, just a little bit more Fortnite-y.
Since Windwalker Echo hasn't brought any other items with her to Fortnite, her skin is actually a little cheaper than most others. Just 800 V-Bucks which is a little more than half the regular going rate for big-name arrivals such as Shang-Chi and Wonder Woman. It makes sense that Echo would have a lower price point since, and no offense to the Unreal Engine demo lady, most who come across her in Fortnite's store probably won't know or remember who she is.
Fortnite is actually rumored to be making the move to Unreal Engine 5 in the very near future. It was originally rumored to make the switch to kick off season eight. Since that is now very close, it seems more likely that Epic will be targeting season nine for the big switch. That lines up with Unreal Engine 5's reported arrival in early 2022.
