Free Guy has topped the box office for the second week in a row, and its figures are promising for other movies aiming for theatrical releases in the near future.
Free Guy opened in theaters a week and a half ago and enjoyed a very promising opening weekend. The video game movie made $51 million during its opening weekend, $28.4 million of which was in North America. It seems those keen to see the movie didn't all rush out during those first few days. That initial momentum has carried on and Free Guy has topped the charts for a second week.
The movie generated an additional $18.8 million in ticket sales during its second week. While that is a drop of almost $10 million between weeks one and two, that's a very good sign according to people in the know. It's referred to as the second-week hold, and is usually in the region of 50% to 60%. Free Guy's tickets sales only dropping by a third is a sign it will probably have a bright future.

“We don’t see 34% drops like this very often, particularly in the pandemic era,” Comscore's senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian explained. In fact, Free Guy has enjoyed the best second-week hold at the box office of any movie to make more than $10 million in the past year. Yes, theaters have been closed for a lot of that time, but that still means it has bettered blockbusters such as Black Widow, The Suicide Squad, and Tenet.
A successful second week means Free Guy has now made more than $100 million worldwide at the box office. $112 million in total so far. Great for a brand new IP and perhaps a sign that more studios will start to move back to theatrical-only releases. While Warners Bros. has already committed to simultaneous releases on HBO Max for all of its movies in 2021, Disney is yet to mention whether Shang-Chi will also be available on Disney Plus and its arrival is now just weeks away.
Free Guy's early success is apparently already enough that it will be getting a sequel. It's also further proof that video game movies can be good now, even though Free City, the game in which most of Free Guy is set, isn't a real game.
