Why Resident Evil 4 Fans Shouldn’t Get Too Excited About the So-Called ‘Tease’

While Capcom just released Resident Evil Village a couple of months ago, fans are already looking ahead to what's next for the long-running survival-horror franchise. The Capcom ransomware leak has seemingly confirmed a Resident Evil Switch game that's in development, but it also seems that the beloved Resident Evil 4 is getting a remake as well. Neither of those Resident Evil projects have been confirmed in an official capacity, though many fans seem to think a recent tweet is a tease for the leaked Resident Evil 4 remake.

The tweet was sent out by the official Resident Evil Twitter page and it includes the text "4 Itchy. Tasty." This tweet kickstarted widespread speculation that Capcom was actively teasing a Resident Evil 4 remake announcement, but it seems safe to say that fans are jumping to conclusions. While it's almost certain that a Resident Evil 4 remake is in active development, this tweet by the Resident Evil Twitter is nowhere close to being a tease for it.

Hardcore Resident Evil fans will likely recognize the tweet as being from one of the franchise's most infamous notes. For those unfamiliar with the Resident Evil games, they're full of notes, letters, and documents that players can find in the game world and read at their leisure. These notes offer background information on Resident Evil's characters and fill in some blanks when it comes to the story in each game.

This tweet is a reference to a note from the original Resident Evil game called The Keeper's Diary. One of the most memorable notes in Resident Evil's history, Keeper's Diary details an Umbrella employees descent into madness as they become infected with the T-Virus. The diary gets progressively less comprehensible and more disturbing as it goes on, eventually ending with the last page that includes the number 4 and the words "Itchy. Tasty."

After reading the note, one of Resident Evil's most famous jump scares happens, as a zombie bursts out of a nearby closet and attacks the player. It's easily one of the scariest Resident Evil moments and something that really stands out in the franchise, so it makes sense for the official Resident Evil Twitter to be referencing it. It's unclear what exactly expired the official Resident Evil Twitter to quote the Keeper's Diary, but since it's part of such an iconic moment in the Resident Evil franchise, a reason isn't really needed.

Resident Evil Conspiracy Theories

The most likely explanation is that this tweet has nothing to do with anything in regards to new Resident Evil game teases, but that hasn't stopped people from coming up with conspiracy theories about what it could possibly mean. The most popular theory being shared online is that this tweet is referencing the leaked Resident Evil 4 remake, and that assumption also led to plenty of complaints about Capcom remaking that game instead of Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

There seems to be a great deal of Resident Evil fans who want to see Code: Veronica remade, and they came out of the woodwork to complain about the leaked Resident Evil 4 remake after Capcom sent out this tweet. Of course, it's already been established that this tweet almost certainly has nothing to do with the Resident Evil 4 remake and is likely just a nod to the Keeper's Diary from the first Resident Evil game, so there's no real reason for Code: Veronica fans to get upset about it.

Another theory shared on Twitter is that this tweet is meant to be a reference to Resident Evil Village DLC. Some fans have come to the conclusion that the number "4" in the tweet is pointing to four different Resident Evil Village DLC packs being planned, but again, the reason that the "4" is there is because that's what was in the Keeper's Diary note. It's even less likely that this tweet has anything to do with Resident Evil Village DLC, and so fans shouldn't hold their breath.

All that's known about the Resident Evil Village DLC is that it's in development. Capcom confirmed as much at its latest Resident Evil anniversary event, but stopped short of providing specifics about what fans can expect from the game's DLC. It seems that the Resident Evil Village DLC is in the early stages of development, and so it may still be some time before fans learn more, especially if rumors of a Resident Evil Switch game releasing this year turn out to be true.

The uproar over this seemingly innocent tweet from the official Reisdent Evil Twitter account is a good indication that fans are hungry to learn more about the franchise's future. With 2021 being the 25th anniversary of the Resident Evil franchise, Capcom likely has more announcements and surprises in store, so hopefully fans get their wish sooner rather than later and don't have to overanalyze tweets like this.

Of course, there is a slim possibility that Capcom is using this page from Keeper's Diary to tease fans, but that seems highly unlikely.

A Resident Evil 4 remake is rumored to be in development.
