What Capcom May Be Hinting About Resident Evil With Its ‘Itchy, Tasty’ Tweet

Yesterday, the official Resident Evil Twitter account posted a cryptic message that has since fired up speculation within the Resident Evil community. The tweet in question read "4 Itchy. Tasty." and veteran Resident Evilplayers would know that this refers to the Keeper's Diary found in the original 1996 game, and its 2002 remake.

For the uninitiated, The Keeper's Diary chronicled the events leading up to the accident in the Spencer Mansion. While the diary starts off normally, succeeding entries revealed how the author slowly succumbed to the T-Virus infection, hinting that when the keeper wrote the iconic line, "Itchy. Tasty." he was already a zombie. Of course, the exact reason Capcom decided to tweet this quote yesterday remains a mystery, but here are some possibilities for what it could mean.

A Project Related to the First Resident Evil Game

Given that the tweet directly references the iconic Keeper's Diary found in the original Resident Evil, Capcom may be cooking up something related to the game that started it all. Since Capcom has not given any details as to what it is actually teasing, it could be anything at this point. It is possible that Capcom is once again remastering the remake of the first Resident Evil game to the PS5 and Xbox Series X, similar to what the studio did with the PS4 and Xbox One.

Another possibility is a full-fledged remake of the first Resident Evil game. While this remains unlikely, given that a remake of Resident Evil already exists, Capcom mentioned two years ago that another remake is not impossible. Furthermore, given that 2021 marks the franchise's 25th anniversary, it wouldn't be surprising if Capcom plans to remake Resident Evil again, transforming it into a full-fledged modern game similar to the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Lastly, it is also possible that Capcom will include the Spencer Mansion as one of the locations in the upcoming multiplayer game, Resident Evil Re: Verse.

A Clue About What the Resident Evil Village DLC Could Entail

It is worth remembering that during E3 2021 last June, Capcom announced that it is developing a DLC expansion for Resident Evil Village. Unfortunately, the announcement did not detail what the DLC would entail. Given this, it is possible that the DLC would contain heavy references from the first Resident Evil game, which actually makes sense since Chris Redfield is also a character in Resident Evil Village. Fans should remember that alongside Jill Valentine, Chris was one of the first playable characters in the 1996 game.

The tweet referencing the Keeper's Diary could mean that traditional zombies may appear in Resident Evil Village's DLC, alongside a location that heavily resembles the Spencer Mansion. Given that Chris Redfield is likely to be the playable character in the DLC, having all these elements in the expansion would serve as the perfect throwback to the original game.

Resident Evil 4 Remake

Shortly after Capcom published the tweet, some Resident Evil fans speculate that it could be a tease to the long-rumored remake of Resident Evil 4. While the term "Itchy. Tasty." has no direct connection with Leon and Resident Evil 4, the number 4 included in the tweet raised suspicion. It is worth noting that the original text found in the 1996 game did say "4. Itchy. Tasty."

However, there is still a possibility that the tweet is actually teasing Resident Evil 4. If one is to read into it, the 4, while included in the original text, may actually be Capcom's way of hinting that it is talking about Resident Evil 4. On the other hand, the "Itchy. Tasty." part could be Capcom's way of acknowledging that it knows that fans are "itching" for the studio to finally put down rumors and confirm the next Resident Evil remake.
