Gamescom Announces Initial Attendees; Central Theme is “Games: The New Normal”

Gamescom organizers have announced the initial attendees for Gamescom 2021, and the digital conference’ central theme of “Games: The New Normal.”

As stated in the press release, several “digital participation as gamescom partners” have been confirmed. Major names inclide 505 Games, Activision, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Bethesa Softworks, Electronic Arts, Headup, Koch Media, Sega, Team17, Thunderful Games, Ubisoft, Wargaming, and Xbox.

This means the above could have announcements at Gamescom: Opening Night Live, other Gamescom Shows, or showing off what they have at the Gamescom Now content hub. As a purely digital event, this means a greater focus on livestreams and presentations.

In addition to the above companies, 80 “curated top indie titles” will also be showcased at the Indie Arena Booth Online. 40 other indie games will be presented at the Arcade Village part of IAB Online.

All of the above join previously announced media and reach partners; including Facebook Gaming, TikTok, Twitch, and YouTube. This list now includes Seven.One, ProSieben MAXX, Esports.com, and VK.com.

The central theme of Gamescom 2021 has also been declared as “Games: The New Normal.” New Normal has been a somewhat controversial term coined by politicians about the changes the world may come to after the COVID-19 pandemic; along with those concerned what it might be. For Gamescom it means the potential for games after the pandemic is over.

“The central theme of gamescom 2021 has also been decided: ‘Games: The New Normal’ will focus on the huge potential of games for society, which needs to be harnessed, especially in a more digital and networked world after the Corona pandemic. The trends include ‘more games for less money’, because never before has it been so affordable to play such a wide variety of games as it is today, and ‘live streaming’, because live broadcasts with a community are no longer just a phenomenon of games culture, which has once again grown strongly in recent months, but have long since become the bonfire of the digital age.”

Gamescom 2021 runs from August 25th to August 27th; starting with the premiere of Gamescom: Opening Night Live.
