It seems the main Ghost of Tsushima campaign is not the only thing getting updated for the PS5. Developer Sucker Punch announced this morning that Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, the free multiplayer add-on for its anachronistic samurai title, will be getting a standalone release on both PS4 and PS5 on September 3, 2021. Owners of either version of the main game will receive this separate application for free likely in a bid to keep install sizes smaller.
If you do not own Ghost of Tsushima but are still interested in Legends, it will be available for purchase on the same day for $19.99 / €19.99 / £15.99 on both platforms. That's great because progress made in the PS4 version will carry over to the PS5 one and vice versa. That basically confirms cross-platform multiplayer, meaning you can still enjoy Legends with your friends that were lucky enough to get Sony's next-generation console.

Simply having Legends exist on PS5 isn't enough for Sucker Punch as the company also announced a slew of new features coming to the game. The first will be a competitive mode titled "Rivals." Two teams of two will compete to defeat waves of enemies that drop Magatamas you can collect. Doing so will impose debuffs on the other team to harm them. It sounds rather interesting, especially since it's not direct combat with other players.
There will also be balance changes to survival mode and weekly survival nightmare challenges to entice you back. Not only that, but players that have complete New Game+ in the main story will be able to unlock additional cosmetics in Legends, further incentivizing you to do some trophy hunting.
The last part of this update confirms that a new piece of content will be coming each week starting on September 10 and running until October 1. Sucker Punch teases new rivals maps, new survival maps based on Iki Island, and a tougher variant of last year's raid. All in all, it sounds like a substantial bit of content that may justify purchasing the PS5 Director's Cut if you've already thoroughly destroyed the main game.
