Guardians of the Galaxy Game is Changing Character Origins and Designs

The upcoming Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy video game is published by Square Enix and made by the developers behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided. Eidos Montreal's Guardians of the Galaxy will be coming out this October 26 with a fresh new look and feel for the game's main cast.

This won't be the first time the Guardians make their way into games or even get their own video game following the team's adventures. The galactic misfit heroes had a video game made by Telltale Games back in 2017, and now they're getting another one for this year. However, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game will be changing some elements of the team's origins and overall character designs.

Recently, Jean-Francois Dugas, the Senior Creative Director at Eidos Montreal, made a post that informs players about some of the changes being made to the Guardians in the game. Dugas said Eidos Montreal were given carte blanche to make a new take on the team. The developers drew inspiration from not only the MCU Guardians of the Galaxy films but the comic books, animated series, and more for reimaginging the team in a "fresh and faithful way."

Dugas said that the developers went for a space pirate design for Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, drawing on his love for the 1980s to inform his design. He gets the title "Star-Lord" from his favorite rock band of the same name, and his 80s nostalgia inspires his hairstyle, leather jacket, and the pins on the jacket. Drax the Destroyer is visually like his appearance in the MCU, but Dugas added that his body's scarification conveys the most important events of his life.

According to the post, the developers took inspiration for Gamora's design from the comic books, giving her a white and black full-tactical body armor, as well as big feline predators for her gear. Her design is meant to reflect her status as the deadliest woman in the galaxy, with her armor described as practical with sharp edges to emphasize her readiness for combat. Rocket and Groot's designs are meant to evoke their close friendship, as Groot wears a harness made by Rocket to help him with climbing and combat, while Rocket wears a bead on his goatee that's shaped like a mini-Groot.

Dugas also shared some details about the in-universe history. In this game, the galaxy was ravaged by a Galactic War instigated by the Chitauri, the alien invaders from the MCU's first Avengers film and later in Avengers: Endgame. They were also aided by Thanos, though the post doesn't explain why. The Chitauri's Galactic War takes place 12 years before the start of the game and is the catalyst behind much of the team's backstories and how some of them even meet.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy releases October 26 for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
