Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is all about being a part of a team of colorful and lively personalities. To achieve this, developers at Eidos Montreal will craft an experience packed with dialogue, so much so that it’s double the size of what you encountered in Deus Ex.
Senior gameplay director Patrick Fortier explained how much effort was put into this aspect of the game. Speaking to Game Informer, Fortier said the characters will definitely “feel alive” and will talk about all kinds of things all the time, even if the player is inactive. In addition, Eidos is trying to avoid the repetition of phrases to keep things fresh if you have to replay the same section more than once.

Eidos also wants to reward players for taking their time and paying attention to what the Guardians are doing and saying, thereby allowing you to feel like part of the team. The game isn’t just about getting from battle to battle, and there are plenty of neat little moments to fill the space in-between. For instance, if you put the controller aside, the team may share jokes or stories while waiting for your next step.
With such a lofty approach, Eidos had to record way more lines for the game. Fortier says in terms of speech, there will be “twice as much dialogue” as in the Deus Ex games. While Fortier didn’t clarify which Deus Ex game he’s referring to, it’s possible he means Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the latest game in the franchise as of now.
Fortier continues to say the game will be very reactive to whatever the player is doing. For example, if you choose to backtrack on a mission, you’ll get specific remarks from your companions. In addition, the Guardians will always comment on the scenery around you, depending on where you are currently looking at. After hearing plenty of the team’s commentary, you’ll unlock new dialogue with them back on the ship. All of this is optional, but it will give you a chance to get to know the characters better
Despite the focus on characters and dialogue, you shouldn’t expect any more RPG freedom in Guardians of the Galaxy, as the game will be a strictly story-driven adventure. According to the devs, players can not even choose where to go next on the galaxy map when inside of the ship Milano. Let’s hope it won’t be a missed opportunity.
