Gunzilla Hires Neill Blomkamp To Help Make A Triple-A Multiplayer Shooter

Gunzilla Games is a relatively new dev that's working on their very first game. The studio has former staff from Crytek, Ubisoft, EA, and more, so they've certainly got the talent to make a good game. All they needed was a visionary to give their game a living, breathing world.

And now they've got that visionary in the form of Neill Blomkamp, writer and director for sci-fi films District 9, Elysium, and Chappie. As revealed in an interview with IGN, Blomkamp has signed on with Gunzilla as "chief visionary officer," a fancy title for what he describes as "an egalitarian version of being a film director."

But unlike directing a film, where the writer/director mostly dictates the course of production, Blomkamp said he has to become more "integrated" with Gunzilla's development team.

"I can come in with a very definitive point of view, but it has to work on two levels," he told IGN. "It has to be accepted by the greater team as the right creative direction to go in. And it also has to be, first and foremost, something that can integrate into the architecture of gameplay in a way that's beneficial to the game."

A better description of chief visionary officer, according to Blomkamp, was to think of him as the George R. R. Martin of Gunzilla's Eden Ring; he'll provide the narrative foundation for the world that the development team will build the game’s story upon.

Blomkamp admitted he has very little experience in the games industry–the closest he got was the canceled Halo movie adaptation with Peter Jackson. But Blomkamp is an avid gamer, so he’s at least not jumping into the games development biz completely blind.

As for Gunzilla’s game, Blomkamp had little to say about it. He mentioned that it’ll be a triple-A multiplayer shooter and that he prefers near-future sci-fi settings (as you can already tell from his movies), but that’s about it. From the sound of it, Gunzilla will be taking on the likes of Valorant, which might be a tough fight.
