Recently in an interview with GQ Magazine, Marcus Smith, the Creative Director at Insomniac Games, was asked multiple questions about Sunset Overdrive. GQ Magazine asked him, “Having also got the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne to work on Sunset Overdrive, is there anyone left on your alt-rock bucket list?” and Marcus Smith replied with “Yeah. I have to get Can back together.” Later GQ Magazine asked Marcus, “Amazing shout. Is there any life left in the Sunset Overdrive franchise, given it used to be an Xbox exclusive?”Then Marcus Smith replied with, “I mean, never say never is my approach. Obviously, we’re part of Sony now, but we own the IP, and so there’s nothing really stopping us other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future.” The last question GQ Magazine asked Marcus was, “I suppose the question is would you want to make another one?” He stated, “I would. I think there are a lot of stories that can be told in that universe, and I would love to return to it. I had a lot of fun making that game.”
Sony registered a trademark for Sunset Overdrive earlier this month. This could either be related to a remaster or a complete sequel to the original game. We do not know anything that Insomniac and Sony will do with this. Insomniac does own the IP, but the first game was only on PC and Xbox. I think this could mean that we can expect a PlayStation Port for Sunset Overdrive very soon. In 2019, According to Game Insider, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida reportedly said that the company isn’t interested in bringing Sunset Overdrive to PS4 thanks to instead “looking forward to future titles.” maybe his plans changed, and he did say that they aren’t interested in bringing it to PS4 this could be a PS5 port.
