Lead Producer Clarifies Details for Lies of P

Developers Quick to Mention Lies of P Similarities to Bloodborne Unintentional

For those who didn’t see it last month, Lies of P dropped their first gameplay trailer. It looked pretty bloodborne-like as the main character smashed its way through enemies. True, it’s the pre-alpha stage, but already looks fantastic and something people get excited over. Kotaku spoke with Ji-won Choi, lead producer of Neowiz, Lies of P‘s publisher. Choi was quick to clarify that the upcoming game was not, in fact, another Bloodborne. Not intentionally at least.

“Though we’re greatly honored that many players felt the ‘Bloodborne vibe’ through our trailer release, it definitely wasn’t intentional,” said Choi. “Still, Bloodborne and other Souls-like titles are certainly inspirational, and almost everyone in our team is a hardcore Souls-like fan.”

This dark twist to the classic Pinocchio story does have a checkpoint system similar to bonfires and “aspects of death penalty and difficulty level”, but otherwise, the game has its own original mechanics otherwise. Taking place in the pre-industrial city of Kurt, Lies of P follows the story of Pinocchio as he attempts to find his creator, Geppetto. This “puppet mechanoid” will use his artificial arm, known as his Slave arm (though why it’s called this, hasn’t been explained), to use eight different tools throughout the game. Pinocchio can, of course, lie in the course of the story to various NPCs, and the amount that he lies will determine the course of the story, including different game events, and alternative endings.

But of course, everyone wants to know the answer to the important question. While we know that while Pinocchio lies during the game, it will make him “more human”. But does that mean…a bigger nose, like in the classic tale?

“We decided against allowing Pinocchio’s nose to grow because we wanted to make him look cool (as opposed to silly),” said Choi. “But we do want to implement the idea somewhere. We can’t say we have any solid plans at this point.”

So no long nose like in the classic Disney movie. Drat.

Long nose or not, this does not take away from what looks like a very cool game, and the amount of care and detail that’s gone into the game itself. According to Choi, half of the base content is done, but only 30% of the game overall is finished, which includes the six-month refining and polishing planned in post-production. This is why Lies of P is tentatively scheduled to be released in 2023, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

But considering what we’ve seen of just the pre-alpha, this is a game to keep an eye out for.
