Yesterday evening, Dualshockers' Tom Henderson suggested on social media that a brand new Twisted Metal game was in the works. Known for accurately leaking details about Battlefield and Call of Duty, Henderson Tweeted an image of series anti-hero Sweet Tooth that simply read "2023," pointing to some kind of revival coming in the next few years.
While vague enough to be anything, what lent the Tweet credibility is the fact that Sony is working on a Twisted Metal television project. Confirmed a few years back to be in development at PlayStation Productions, a new game would absolutely be a great way to market a show or vice versa. The proposed year of 2023 would also line up pretty well with the TV series premiere.
We may be jumping to conclusions, however, especially if ex-series director David Jaffe is to be believed. In a video on his YouTube channel yesterday, Jaffe stated that he does not believe this leak to be true. Unable to completely debunk the claim, Jaffe provided some insight that does add up.
"These are the guys who reached out to me and hooked me up with the guys making the TV show," Jaffe explained. "I don't imagine they would cut me out of it. At least, at a pure PR level, so they could say [I was] involved." Jaffe mentioned that he tends to hear a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff he probably shouldn't know but has yet to catch wind of any Twisted Metal revival.

On the other hand, it is possible that Jaffe's videos have pushed Sony to cut ties with him. After stirring controversy earlier this year about Days Gone when interviewing the game's director, Sony may be keeping Jaffe out of the loop to avoid a similar situation with Twisted Metal. As Jaffe says in the video, "I don't think I’m Sony's favorite person right now, just because of this stream and everything… [but] if it’s true I would be very, very hurt that PlayStation didn't ask for my input at best, or at worst, at least let me know it was happening."
One last detail that gives Jaffe's input credibility is the recently released car combat game Destruction AllStars. As he brought up, the PS5 exclusive title was not very well received by the press and barely made a dent in terms of sales. It seems unlikely that Sony would greenlight another car combat game so quickly. It becomes doubly unlikely as Twisted Metal has always had a more limited appeal.
Whatever the case, it appears that the future of the Twisted Metal series is up in the air. We can at least state that the TV series is still on track, but a new game may never materialize.
