Long Running Tokusatsu Franchise Comes To The Big Screen

A movie based on the bug-eyed superhero series, Kamen Rider, is set to be released this winter.

The untitled Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary film has been confirmed and will be released towards the end of the year. Director Shinichirо̄ Shirakura announced a few months ago that the yet to be titled project is still in the works. Concerns rose with fans thinking the movie may be scrapped due to delays caused by the global pandemic, however Shirakura commented that the movie will be “worthy” to “commemorate the 50th anniversary of Kamen Rider's TV broadcast and theatrical version release.” This is not to be confused with the most recent Super Sentai film – Bee-Bop Dream – which saw a theatrical release in February and a release to DVD and Blu-Ray in June.

Kamen Rider has the distinction of being one of the longest running tokusatsu franchises in Japan. Tokusatsu are categorized as live action film or television shows that use a lot of special effects. The series exists in the same universe as the Super Sentai. Furthermore, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai are directly related to the Power Rangers franchise. Most of the battle footage in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comes from Super Sentai’s Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger. Additionally, most of the Power Rangers series has followed the Super Sentai series.

In other ranger news, Pasela Resort in Toshima-ku, Tokyo just got morphinomenal with a collaboration with Super Sentai – the Super Sentai Restaurant. Also recently, Jason Bischoff, a former Saban employee, showed fans what could have been when he posted concept art from “Project Nomad”, a cancelled triple-A Power Rangers game. Kamen Rider can also be seen in Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered for the PS5. The Arachnid Rider suit – one of the alternate suits donned by our favorite arthropod Peter Parker – was inspired by the series.
