Monster Hunter Stories 2: Monster Egg And Monster Den Guide

Quick Links

One of the main things you'll be focusing on in Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is collecting different kinds of monster eggs so that you can build your perfect monstie party. There are 217 kinds of monsters throughout the game that you can encounter, though some are variants of each other. Out of those, there are 125 that can become monsties who join your team.

You can obtain monster eggs from nests inside of Monster Dens, but you won't know what is inside of each egg unless you are already familiar with the egg pattern. For everything you need to know about monster eggs, dens, and more, we've got it all covered right here.

Where to Find Eggs

You can grab yourself some new monster eggs from nests, which can be found in Monster Dens. You can only get one egg from each nest, but you'll have a few chances to change it out in the hopes of a better one. There are only a finite number of times you can swap an egg before the nest empties. Nests relating to the storyline will generally empty after you grab the first egg. Nests are marked on the map by an egg icon.

Some nests will be guarded by a monster, some will have a sleeping monster in the nest, and some will be empty. Regardless of how the nest is when you reach it, if you keep swapping out eggs and spend more time there, it increases the chance of a monster attack, either by waking up or appearing. Sleeping monsters cannot be woken any other way, so don't worry about running into them or having to sneak around.

You have to carry the egg out of the nest to properly obtain it, after which a pop-up box will appear asking if you want to leave the den. You can choose to immediately leave the den, or remain (and the egg will be put into your Egg Carton) while you continue exploring the den for gathering spots and monsters.

Your Egg Carton can carry 12 eggs at a time. You can access your Egg Carton from the Camp menu to view your current eggs and their information, such as where you acquired them, their egg type, and their Navirou assessment. You can choose to discard eggs from your Egg Carton from your menu at any time, even if you have visited the stable and seen your eggs in there, they will go back in your Egg Carton if left unhatched

Navirou's Egg Assessment

When you grab an egg, Navirou will give you his assessment of the egg, commenting on its smell and weight. The heavier and smellier the egg is, the better it is — this means you will have an increased chance of obtaining a monstie with better or rare genes.

If a glow appears when selecting an egg, you know it will be better than average with genes, if a glow and sparkles appear when selecting, it is even higher quality when it comes to genes. Each egg belongs to a different type of monster family, which it will be identified as once in your Egg Carton

How to Hatch Eggs

You can hatch your eggs by visiting the stables, there is one in each village within the game and it will be marked on your map with a little egg logo. The felyne outside of the stables will have a yellow speech bubble above its head when there is an egg you can hatch. If the egg was of higher quality, you'll see more stat boosts appear on the screen when it is born, and it will likely have better genes too.

Once your monstie is hatched, it will be placed in the stable by default, so remember to move it into your party if you want to use it right away. You can expand the size of your stable, increasing the number of monsties you can keep at any given time, by purchasing stable upgrades with Bottle Caps from the Melynx Inc. NPC.

At the stables, as well as hatching eggs, you can always manage your monstie party, as well as perform the Rite of Channeling and send out an Expedition Party once you have unlocked those features.

Where to Find Monster Dens

Monster Dens are the rocky outcrops with entrances that appear on the main map of each area, as well as any off-shooting smaller map area. The location of Monster Dens changes every time you enter the map. Each Monster Den layout is randomly generated with different gathering spots and monsters residing within. The Monster Den map will mimic similar locales in terms of gathering spots, so if the Monster Den is a cave, it will not have gathering spots not found in caves, such as hives.

You can also make special Monster Dens spawn by making a monster retreat in battle. When monsters retreat, a special Monster Den will appear with an egg above the doorway and it will be indicated on your map. These Monster Dens result in a guaranteed egg of the monster that created the den.

If you're after a particular type of egg, you can battle the monster in question and make it retreat to force spawn a den. Once inside, as you know every egg you grab will be that monster, you can keep swapping out eggs until you see the glow/sparkles to ensure a better quality egg. These special types of Monster Dens can be spawned within another Monster Den.

Rare Monster Dens

Sometimes a Monster Den will be gold instead of the normal grey rock — this is a Rare Monster Den. The nests within Rare Monster Dens have an increased chance of yielding a better egg, so you should definitely explore any of these that you come across.

Even if you don't necessarily want another monstie, you can use the Rite of Channeling (once you unlock it) to pass the rare genes onto one of your favorite monsties to make it stronger. Additionally, Rare Monster Dens can be home to monsters that don't normally spawn in the immediate locale, perfect for farming materials or causing the monster to retreat and spawn its own den.

Some eggs will not begin to appear in the area they are native to until you have progressed further through the storyline. For example, Pukei-Pukei eggs will not appear until you have defeated the Pukei-Pukei for Mahana Village.
