Mortal Shell is extremely tough. Much like the Souls series it takes inspiration from, the game presents a combination of tough enemies, a maze-like world design, and a cryptic narrative in a smaller package that can wear even the most experienced players down.

The lack of announcements on Elden Ring from FromSoftware is taking a toll on fans with Mortal Shell filling a void for players who love the genre. Despite the difficulty, some players have already managed to complete the game, and YouTuber Esoterickk has beat the game in an incredible fashion. Esoterickk completed the game without a shell (akin to a class) and without taking any damage from bosses. Highlights of his run can be found on his YouTube channel, featuring his boss encounters.

Describing the playthrough in the video description, Esoterickk states the nearly unlimited stamina and the weapon skill build up made the game a lot easier than his first normal run. Mortal Shell is tough in its enemy encounters and boss battles, so avoiding damage is already impressive enough given some one hit kills some bosses can do. Completing the game without a shell makes this run memorable given Mortal Shell was only released on August 18.

Mortal Shell‘s reception since its announcement has earned the game a Metacritic score of 77%. The response from fans and critics alike has been so positive that publisher Playstack announced that a physical release of Mortal Shell will be launched early October. The physical release of the console version will come with a few extras for fans as well including an art book, a poster of the game, and a physical disc copy, much to the relief of fans with many indie games resorting to a game key within the case in the past. Unfortunately, the physical PC edition will not come with a disc, with a Epic Games Store key in its stead.

Meanwhile, fans of the Souls series may not have to wait long for the remake of FromSoftware’s other classic, Demon’s Souls. Developed by Bluepoint Games, recent reports indicate Demon’s Souls is aiming for the PlayStation 5 launch window. Though no specifics have been announced regarding dates of both the console and the game, Demon’s Souls did receive a rating in both Japan and Korea, indicating the game is launching soon. Hopefully, fans will learn more soon.

Mortal Shell is out now on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
