Netflix Is Making A Live-Action Pokemon Series

It turns out that the rumored HBO Max-affiliated live-action Pokemon series isn’t happening, but you know what is happening? A Netflix live-action Pokemon series. That’s according to Variety’s unnamed sources, who added that the show would be headed by Lucifer co-showrunner and executive producer Joe Henderson.

Henderson will have both writing credits and executive producer credits on the show. Variety wasn’t able to provide anything else except that the show is very much in the early stages of development and that it’ll be live-action just like Detective Pikachu was.

Detective Pikachu was 2019's masterpiece film and one of the best-grossing video game movies of all time right up until Sonic the Hedgehog blew it out of the water. Even still, fans loved the live-action depiction of Pokemon's world and a TV show sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

It might also be the closest we get to a Detective Pikachu sequel, according to Justice Smith. The Detective Pikachu protagonist recently said that people should “kind of bury their hopes” for a sequel, adding that he hasn't heard anything about a Detective Pikachu 2 even though he'd love to reprise his role.

Pokemon isn't the only live-action series coming to Netflix of course. Avatar: The Last Airbender will begin filming later this year according to a new rumor, which is the most we've heard from Netflix on the Airbender remake since the show was announced in 2018. A Vancouver area industry blog reported that filming will start in November and run until May of 2022.

Albert Kim will run the show after the departure of original Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Other than that, it's unknown who will step up to play the role of Aang, or more importantly, who will play the role of Momo.
